Vowel Phonemes is a phonics module that teaches students the relationships between sounds and letters, to help them to ‘sound out’ words rather than guessing.
Overview
Vowel sounds in English are particularly tricky to read and spell because the same sound can be spelled in several ways (e.g. rain, day, they). Vowel Phonemes is suitable for students who have mastered basic phonics (matching single letters to sounds), but still struggle to read regularly-spelled words. It also supports students who struggle to spell vowel graphemes.
In this module, students learn the graphemes that are commonly used to spell vowel sounds, and the patterns that affect where each grapheme is likely to occur.
The module is structured with a ‘speech-to-print’ approach, which means the topics are organised around phonemes (individual sounds). Each topic takes one vowel phoneme (e.g. /oi/) and teaches the common graphemes that are used to spell that phoneme (e.g. <oi> and <oy>).
Activities are carefully designed to promote vocabulary learning, as well as phonics.
Step-by-step guidance for teaching Vowel Phonemes is available in the Teaching Manual.
