Unusual Syllable Spellings is for students who struggle to read or spell words with syllables that don’t obey the usual correspondences between sounds and letters.
Overview
Unusual Syllable Spellings takes the student systematically through some common word-endings that don’t follow the usual grapheme-phoneme correspondences, such as <tion>, <ture> and <cious>.
Students will be taught how to analyse the structure of these ‘irregular’ spellings to see the underlying logic. Activities are designed to promote vocabulary learning and the use of advanced vocabulary in writing.
Step-by-step guidance for teaching Unusual Syllable Spellings is available in the Teaching Manual.
