This module is designed for students who have a reasonable grasp of phonics, but still struggle to read longer words
Overview
A common problem for teens and tweens is decoding long words, and many students resort to guessing based on the initial syllable, a few letters, or the context. These students need strategies for breaking words into manageable chunks and then putting them back together again.
There are two main strategies for breaking words into chunks. Words can be broken into prefixes, bases and suffixes according to their morphological structure. Alternatively, they can be broken into syllables. As these two strategies have complementary strengths and weaknesses, Chunking Words for Reading and Understanding teaches students to use both methods of ‘word attack’.
Students also learn to use their knowledge of the different ways that a grapheme can be pronounced to try out different possible pronunciations of a word. This technique is especially useful for vowel graphemes, and is called ‘flexing’.
Step-by-step guidance for teaching Chunking Words for Reading and Understanding is available in the Teaching Manual.
