This episode is quick introduction to the basics of English spelling. Dr Pam Kastner introduces the factors that influence English spelling, including phonology, morphology, word origins, spelling conventions and syllable position. She also describes how spelling assessments are an under-used source of information about students’ literacy difficulties, and how they can be a hugely valuable tool for deciding how to group students and what to teach them.

If you’re interested in learning more about the principles of English spelling, Sue Hegland’s book is excellent (see review here). In this episode, she and Anna discuss what got Sue interested in spelling in the first place, before talking through some of the central concepts from the book, including base elements (and the terminological confusion surrounding them), word sums, morphological matrices, etymological markers, plus twin and associated bases.
