<image:title>Insights - How to teach adolescents to read long words</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s common to come across secondary school students who are pretty good at decoding one- and two-syllable words, but will guess longer words based on a few letters or the first syllable. For example, they might read complicate as complain, or triumphant as trumpet. Guessing can be fairly successful at primary school, where the vocabulary is simpler, and there are likely to be pictures that can act as prompts to help guess the words. But at secondary school the texts are more complex, and these students can find themselves floundering in a sea of long words.</image:caption>

A morphological approach provides insights into meaning: <orth> means “straight” or “correct”, <odont> means “tooth”, and <ist> indicates a person doing a job.</image:caption>

This has led me to package up all my resources as LIfTT – the Literacy Intervention for Teens and Tweens.</image:title>

<image:caption>Christopher Such Widely and justifiably recommended as one of the best books on teaching literacy, The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading is my top recommendation for an overview of the science of reading for teachers. It’s all written with a view to what teachers will find useful, and how they can apply it in the classroom.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Margaret J. Snowling For a short ‘introductory’ book, this packs in a lot of information about the nature and causes of dyslexia. It’s written by Maggie Snowling, one of the leading dyslexia experts in the UK, and is in a fairly academic style with a focus on the research. I’d recommend this for students of Specific Learning Difficulties, and teachers or parents with a strong interest in the causes of dyslexia and the debates surrounding it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Misty Adoniou This book focuses on teaching spelling rather than reading. It’s an informative, practical, no-nonsense introduction, suitable for parents and educators. However, I wanted to add it to my list because it was eye-opening to see the range of strategies used to help learners engage with text and stories. <image:caption>Rebecca Loveless and Fiona Hamilton Teaching high frequency words can be difficult because so many of them have atypical relationships between letters and sounds. Rather than resorting to memorisation strategies, the authors have researched why these words are spelled as they are, and use these ‘tales’ to help pupils get to grips with them. I recommend this book for anyone teaching pupils how to read and spell high frequency words.</image:caption>

It’s a really enjoyable read that takes pleasure in the complexities of English spelling, rather than despairing of them!</image:caption>

<image:title>Recommendations - Top recommendations for teaching spelling - Spelling It Out by Misty Adoniou</image:title>
<image:caption>Spelling It Out is an excellent overview of how to teach spelling. It’s wide-ranging yet concise, and extremely accessible. The author summarises how each linguistic component – Phonology, Orthography, Etymology and Morphology (POEM) – affects how English spelling works. In addition, she gives practical guidance on how to teach spellings in a meaningful context, how to design a spelling programme, and how to assess spelling.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recommendations - Top recommendations for teaching spelling - Beneath the Surface of Words by Sue Scibetta Hegland</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my favourite book for understanding the principles behind English spelling and the structure of words. Sue Hegland clearly explains the different factors that can explain why a word is spelled in a particular way. She also introduces word sums and morphological matrices as a means to illustrate the structure of words and the connections between them. This book isn’t a teaching manual, but it will nevertheless give you the tools you need to help your students to improve their spelling.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recommendations - Top recommendations for teaching spelling - Uncovering the Logic of English by Denise Eide</image:title>
<image:caption>While it doesn’t tell you how to teach spelling, Uncovering the Logic of English is a great reference if you want to look up a spelling ‘rule’. It’s written in a fairly conversational style, and is very accessible. It introduces the main graphemes, and patterns in their distribution. In addition, it describes the suffixing conventions, and explains the ‘exceptions’ that can arise when different conventions interact. It also highlights the usefulness Greek and Latin roots/bases for understanding how words are built.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recommendations - Top recommendations for teaching spelling - Spelling for Life by Lyn Stone</image:title>
<image:caption>Of the books that I’ve recommended in this post, Spelling for Life gives the most detail about how to teach particular spelling concepts. Lyn Stone gives example lessons for how to teach concepts such as the jobs of Final Silent E, when to double consonant letters, and which consonant letters to avoid at the end or words. Her approach to ‘exception words’ as something to be investigated systematically is particularly helpful.</image:caption>

Although the book takes you through the alphabet letter-by-letter, Danny Bate has skilfully incorporated a chronological overview of the development of the alphabet within this structure. He describes how the alphabet has evolved to accommodate different languages and changing sounds, and explains why certain spelling conventions developed.</image:caption>

If you want to focus directly on how to use etymology in your teaching, this is the book for you. Not only does it have a short history of the ‘layers’ of etymological influences on English and how they affect spelling, but it also gives examples of how to integrate etymology into your teaching AND it has a massive appendix of useful words to support teaching.</image:caption>
