Interventions, resources & training for those helping older children & teenagers with their literacy

Many older children and adolescents struggle with reading, spelling and punctuation, and supporting them is a major challenge for educators and parents.

But it’s hard to find suitable interventions, resources and advice specifically for the 10–16 age group. That’s where The Literacy Hub comes in.

What you’ll find on The Literacy Hub

The Literacy Hub is a regularly-updated portal full of helpful advice and guidance aimed at anyone who is helping older students with their literacy.

  • School leaders looking for effective literacy interventions for secondary pupils

  • Secondary teachers needing to support struggling readers and spellers in their class

  • Education professionals looking to become better informed about teaching literacy to this age group.

About Me

The Literacy Hub was set up by me, Dr Katharine Barden.

I have a PhD in Linguistics from Cambridge University, I’m an Accredited Specialist Practitioner with the British Dyslexia Association, and I’m a member of PATOSS (the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties).

Since 2018, I’ve worked as a Literacy Coach in a state comprehensive secondary school in South Wales, supporting adolescents with literacy difficulties. In that time, I’ve experienced first-hand the challenges of identifying the support that students need, researching the best teaching practices, and finding the right resources to help them.

It was this that inspired me to create the LIfTT literacy intervention specifically for the 10–16 age group, and to compile other useful resources on this website.
